개항기 이전 천주교 갓등이 공소와 순교자들
갓등이 지역은 외부로부터 어느 정도 격리된 곳이면서도 인근 지역과의 교통이 편했기 때문에, 기존 주민 외에 여러 곳에서 신자들이 들어와 적어도 1820년대 중반까지는 교우촌이 세워지고 1839년 이전에 공소가 설정되었다. 이후 병인박해를 거쳐 개항기에 이르기까지 갓등이 지역에 신앙공동체가 면면히 이어졌으며, 1880년대 초에 다시 교우촌(공소)으로 역사에 등장했다. 갓등이 지역에는 농촌마을인 왕림과 옹기점 마을인 독정이, 가마리가 병존했고 이 교우촌들이 각각 공소로 성장하면서 1888년 수원교구 지역에 최초로 설정된 갓등이(왕림)본당의 모태가 되었다. 박해시기 갓등이 지역에서 여러 명의 순교자들이 배출되었는데, 특히 6~7년간 갓등이에 거주하면서 교리교사로 활동했던 민극가 회장은 교육과 전교에 앞장섰던 순교성인이었다. 1839년 1월 앵베르 주교의 사목방문을 받을 정도로 갓등이 공소는 경기 남부 지역의 주요한 신앙공동체였고, 병인박해기의 순교성인 정의배 마르코 회장과 순교자 최 야고보는 갓등이 지역 출신이었다. 순교자 한 안드레아의 경우에서 보듯이 갓등이는 병인박해기 피신지로서 역할도 수행했다. 필자는 갓등이 지역에서 구전으로 전해오는 무명순교자 묘 2기의 실체를 조사하여, 그 무덤의 주인공들이 1867년 1월 해미에서 38세의 나이로 친척인 최 야고보와 동시에 순교한 ‘최 요왕’과 병인박해 때 갓등이 현지에서 포졸들에게 공개 처형을 당한 ‘방치룡’이라는 가전 전승과 증언을 채취할 수 있었다.
Gatdeung'i gongso(Catholic Mission Station) and its Martyrs before the opening of ports in Korea
Because the Gatdeung'i area was somewhat secluded from the outside yet had convenient transportation to neighboring areas, in addition to existing residents, Catholic adherents arrived from diverse places so that Catholic villages came to be founded by the mid-1820’s and a gongso(mission station) came to be established in or before 1839. Subsequently, from the Catholic Persecution of 1866 to the period following the opening of ports, communities of believers continued unbroken in the Gatdeung'i area and reemerged in history as Catholic villages in the early 1880’s. In the Gatdeung'i area, Wang-rim, a farming village, and Dokjeong’i and Gama-ri, pottery-making villages, coexisted, and these Catholic villages grew into mission stations, serving as the basis of Gatdeung'i Parish Church (Wang-rim Parish Church), the first one to be established in the diocese of Suwon, in 1888. During persecutions, there were many died as martyrs in the Gatdeung'i area. In particular, mission station head St. Stephen Keuk-ka Min, active as a catechist during his residence in Gatdeung'i for 6-7 years, is a martyred saint who led education and evangelization. The Gatdeung'i mission station was an important community of believers in southern Gyeonggi Province, enough to receive a pastoral visit by St. Imbert the 2ndVicarApostolicofKoreain January 1839. Mission station head St. Mark Eui-bae Jeong, a saint who was martyred during the Persecution of 1866, and martyr Jacob Choe were from the Gatdeung'i area. As is shown in the case of Andrew Han, a martyr, Gatdeung'i also played a role as a place of refuge during the Persecution of 1866. The present author investigated the two graves of anonymous martyrs orally transmitted in the Gatdeung'i area and was able to collect oral traditions of the families and testimonies that the graves were of “John the Baptist Choe,” who had died a martyr at the age of 38 in Haemi in January 1867 together with and at the same time as his relative Jacob Choe, and “Chi-ryong Bang,” who had been executed publicly by the police in Gatdeung'i during the Persecution of 1866.
