갓등이 옛 한옥성당의 복원적 고찰
유서 깊은 교우촌 갓등이의 두 번째 한옥성당(1902)은 신축 후 한두 번의 증축과 보수가 있었으며, 70년 동안 사용되어오다가 1970년 노후로 철거되었다. 초기 한옥성당이 거의 사라진 상황에서, 또 초기 한옥교회건축의 세계유산 등재가 논의되고 있는 이러한 때 갓등이 한옥성당을 복원하는 것은 한국교회사의 측면에서는 물론이고, 한국교회건축사 나아가서 한국근대건축사의 중요한 의미를 가진다고 생각한다. 갓등이 성당은 한옥성당의 여러 유형 중에서 가장 보편적인 유형인 ‘단층 3랑식’으로 장변 대 단변의 비가 가장 높은, 즉 종축길이가 횡축 폭에 비해 3배가 넘는 성당이다. 규모 또한 300석을 수용할 정도로 매우 큰 편에 속한다. 당시 갓등이성당의 교세를 짐작케 한다. 건축은 시대의 거울이라고 한다. 교회건축은 신앙의 자세와 의식을 반영한 교회문화의 표상이다. 완전히 잊혀지기 전에 사라진 옛 건물을 복원하여 후세에 남긴다면 잃어버린 역사성과 장소성을 회복할 수 있으며 쉽게 잊어버리는 대중에게 산교육의 장이 될 것이다. 수원교구 설정 50주년을 기념하여 추진하고 있는 ‘왕림 성역화 사업’의 성공을 위해서 갓등이 한옥성당의 복원은 꼭 필요하다고 생각한다. 그러나 이미 사라져 버린것에 대한 완전한 복원은 불가능하므로, 당시의 기법과 의장, 구조, 재료 등에 대한 학술적 연구가 필요하고, 이에 근거한 복원 및 활용계획을 수립하여야 할 것이다. 어떻게 활용할 것인가에 따라 복원의 방향과 방법이 달라질 수 있기 때문이다. 그리고 건물만의 복원이 아니라 주변 환경의 복원도 함께 이루어져야 하며, 기존 경관과도 조화되도록 하여야 할 것이다. 본 연구에서는 두 번째 한옥성당의 위치와 구조, 형태를 문헌자료와 증언을 통해 확인하고, 왕림한옥성당의 교회사적, 건축사적 의의를 살펴봄으로써 복원의 기초자료를 제공하고자 하였다. 뮈텔주교 일기에 실린 신축당시의 배치스케치, 사진자료, 최경환신부의 철거직전의 평면스케치를 분석하여 당시의 건물의 평면, 규모, 형태를 추찰하였다. 복원설계에 앞서 터의 시굴조사를 포함한 자료수집과 심층적인 연구가 선행되어야 할 것이다.
A Study on the Restoration of Old Wang-Rim church
The second Korean style church(1902) of the historic believers village, ‘Gatdeungyi’ had been extended and repaired twice, and used for 70 years, and demolished by aging in 1970. In the circumstance of that The early Korean style churches had died away, and been discussed up by the tentative list of the World Heritage, the restoration of the Korean style church has very important meaning. ‘Gatdeungyi’ church was the ‘one-story Basilican style’ church which was the most universal in the various types of Korean style church. Its ratio of long edge(flank side) versus short edge(front side) is more than three times. Also its size was big enough to accept 300 seats. Architecture is the mirror of the time. Church architecture is symbol of the church culture which reflects the attitude and consciousness of the faith. If we will restore the old building which had died away, we will be able to recover ‘the historicity’ and ‘place meaning’ which were lost before forgetting completely. It will be the living education field for the masses who forget easy. I think the restoration of ‘Gatdeungyi’ church is essential for the success of ‘Wangrim Holy site formation project’. But the perfect restoration is impossible. So it is necessary to study scholarly on the technology, design, structure, and materials at the time. On the based those, the plan of the restoration and reuse should be established. And the surrounding environment should be restored too, and be harmonized with existing landscape. In this study I checked the location, structure, form of the second Korean style church, and considered the church historic and architectural significances. And I tried to conjecture the plane, structure, size and shape of the church by analyzing the sketches, photographs, and drawings. Before restore design, data collection including prospecting survey and in-depth study should be preceded up.
