18세기 후반 정약용의 서학(西學) 연구와 사회개혁 사상
본고는 다산 정약용의 학문적 성장기에 큰 영향을 준 두 가지 사고 중에서 외적요인인 서학(천주교)의 영향력에 주목하여 그가 언제 어떠한 서학서(천주교서적)를 어느 정도 읽고 소화하여, 과연 그 학습한 내용을 얼마만큼 그의 현실 개혁적 사상을 수립하는데 활용할 수 있었는지 하는 문제를 검토하였다. 그 결과 다산은 1784년부터 1791년까지 대략 8년간 7~8종의 서학서(천주교서)를 열람하였던 것으로 파악된다. 이중에서도 그의 개혁적 역사관을 추동할 수 있는 사회교리를 담고 있었던 대표적인 서적이 바로 《천주실의(天主實義)》와 《진도자증(眞道自證)》이었다.이 책들에는 민중의 추대에 의한 위정자 선출이라는 참여 민주주의적 사고를 제공한 교황제도에 대한 언급이 공통적으로 있었으며, 백성들의 경제적, 사회적 평등을 지향하는 제도의 개혁을 추동할 수 있는 재산의 공유와 모든 인간의 평등에 대한 원칙적 개념, 그리고 현실적 불평등을 개선해나가는 온건한 방법론, 노동생산의 계획, 지식인의 정신노동과 계몽적 역할 등에 대한 언급과 기존의 지리적 중화주의 사상의 한계성을 초월하는 개방적 세계관 등에 직접, 간접으로 관련된 사회교리들이 담겨 있었다.
Chŏng Yag-yong’s study on Western learning, Catholicism and his thinking of reformation
This paper is focused on the influences of the Western learning and Catholicism in Chŏng Yag-yong’s studying period which impacted strongly to him. And then I examined what kind of book he has been read, when and where he has read them, how much he has understood about his reading, and how much he has used it to apply his thinking of reformation. As a result I have found that he had been read about 7~8 books of Western learning, Catholicism from 1784 to 1791. Among these the most representative books ware Cheonjoosilui(天主實義) and Jindojazeung(眞道自證), which contained social doctrine of reformation theories. These books commonly have the articles of the electing system of the Pope, which provided the democratic thinking of electing way of their governor by the people. And they have not only the articles such as common property and the equality of all human being toward the economic and social equality, but also the moderate way of improving the present inequality, the planning of working production, mental works and enlightening roles by the intellectuals. And they have the social doctrines such as Open view of the world, which superiors the limit of geographic Sinocentrism(中華主義).
