제2대 조선대목구장 앵베르 주교의 조선(朝鮮) 인식
제2대 조선대목구장 앵베르 주교는 1830년대 말 조선에 입국하여 활동하면서 조선에 대한 다양한 정보를 수집·기록하여 파리외방전교회 본부에 전달했다. 이러한 정보들은 동아시아와 조선에 관심이 있는 서양인들에게 매우 유용했고, 이후 조선에 대한 서양세계의 전반적 인식(이미지)을 형성하는데 큰 역할을 했다. 앵베르 주교가 작성한 서한 기록들을 통해 그가 조선에 입국하기 전에 어떠한 사전 정보를 입수했으며, 입국 후 실제로 접하게 된 조선 국가와 조선 정부(지배층)에 대해 어떻게 인식했는지를 알 수 있다. 조선 입국 전에 앵베르 주교가 접했던 자료로는 《감동적인 서한집 신편》 제5권 조선 관련 서한들과 샤를르부아 신부의 《일본 역사》가 확인된다. 그는 중국과 일본을 통해 전해진 왜곡된 정보를 선지식으로 삼았기 때문에 애초부터 조선에 대해 편향적이고 부정적인 선입견을 가지고 있었다. 앵베르 주교는 조선에 입국한 후 조선의 서책과 조선 신자들을 통해 직접적이고 풍부한 정보를 얻을 수 있었다. 하지만 제한된 활동 범위와 짧은 활동 기간 때문에 얻을 수 있는 정보는 한계가 있었고, 박해받는 조선천주교회의 장상으로서 주요 사안을 긍정[선교]과 부정[박해]으로 판단하는 이분법적 시각을 지니고 있었다. 따라서 주교가 조선에 대해 가지고 있던 기존의 선입견은 더욱 심화되었고 또 다른 왜곡된 정보와 인식을 가지게 되었다. 그 결과 주교에게 조선의 국가와 정부는 청일 양국에 속박된 나약한 나라였고, 동시에 죄 없는 천주교회를 박해하는 잔인한 존재였다. 이러한 앵베르 주교의 조선 인식은 19세기 이래 확산되고 있던 서구중심주의적 사고(동아시아에 대한 부정적 입장)와 문명화=복음화라는 사명 의식의 흐름[오리엔탈리즘] 속에 위치하고 있다. 앵베르 주교가 작성한 서한의 내용이 전교회[전교후원회]의 기관지인 《전교회 연보》와 조선교회사 개설서인 《한국천주교회사》를 통해 널리 알려지게 되면서 그러한 부정적 인식이 서양세계에 더욱 확산될 수 있었다.
2nd Vicar Apostolic of Korea Bishop Imbert’s Perception of Korea
The 2nd Vicar Apostolic of Korea, St. Laurent-Joseph-Marie Imbert collected and recorded diverse kinds of information on the country and transmitted it to the headquarters of the Paris Foreign Missions Society (Missions-Étrangères de Paris; MEP) after entering Korea at the end of the 1830’s and while engaging in his activities. Such information was very useful to Westerners who were interested in East Asia and Korea and subsequently played a significant role in shaping the Western world’s overall perception of Korea. Through the epistolary records penned by Bishop Imbert, it is possible to find out the kinds of advance information that he obtained before his entry into Korea and his perception of the land and government of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) that he came to experience in person following his entrance. As for the data that were available to Bishop Imbert before his entry into Korea, letters related to the country in vol. 5 of the New Edifying Letters of the Missions of China and the East Indies (Les nouvelles lettres édifiantes des missions de la Chine et des Indes orientales) and the History of Japan (L’Histoire du Japon) by Father Pierre-François-Xavier de Charlevoix have been confirmed. Because he used as prior knowledge distorted information transmitted through China and Japan, the bishop held biased and negative preconceptions of Korea from the beginning. After entering the country, Bishop Imbert was able to obtain direct and rich information through Korean books and adherents. However, there was a limit to the amount of information that he could obtain due to a limited scope of action and a short duration of action, and, as the head of the persecuted Catholic Church of Korea, he had a dichotomous perspective through which he judged major issues as either positive (evangelization) and negative (persecution). Consequently, the bishop’s existing preconceptions of Korea intensified further and led to yet another distorted information and perception. As a result, to him, the land and government of Korea were a weak country subjugated to both Qing China and Japan and, at the same time, a cruel entity that persecuted the innocent Catholic Church. Such a perception of Korea held by Bishop Imbert is situated in the flow of Eurocentric mentality (negative view of East Asia), which was expanding since the 19th century, and the sense of a calling that civilization equaled evangelization. With the wide dissemination of the contents of Bishop Imbert’s letters through the Annals of the Propagation of the Faith (Les annals de la Propagation de la Foi), and the History of the Church of Korea (L’Histoire de l’Eglise de Corée), an introduction to the history of the Catholic Church in Korea, it was possible for such a negative perception to be further dispersed through the Western world.
