성 황석두(黃錫斗, 1813~1866, 루가)의 생애와 활동
본고는 황석두 루가 성인(1813~1866)의 생애와 활동을 사실주의적 관점에서 조망해본 글이다. 황석두 성인은 교회내 다른 인물들에 비해서 전해지는 문서와 구전자료들이 매우 풍부한 편이기에, 연구작업에는 오히려 여러 자료들 사이의 다양한 편차를 일정한 기준을 가지고 취사선택을 해야하는 어려움이 따른다. 황석두 성인은 1813년 충청도 연풍의 병방골 부유한 향반(鄕班) 출신으로 부인과는 성관계를 갖지 않고 조카를 양자로 두어 부인을 봉양하게 하고 자신은 다블뤼 선교사 등 여러 프랑스인 선교사들의 순방사목 활동을 보조하거나 저술활동을 돕는 일에만 열중했다. 그의 소원은 신앙의 자유를 맞아 전교를 마음껏 해보는 것과 작은 박해를 맞아 자신의 목숨을 천주를 위해 바치는 순교 등 두 가지 뿐이라고 했다. 그는 페레올 주교의 허락을 받아 신학생으로 3년간 교육을 받았으나 교황청에서 그의 아내가 기거할 수녀원이 조선에 없다는 이유로 사제서품을 불허하자, 신학교육을 그만두게 되었고, 부친 사거 후 기울어가는 가계를 돕기 위해서 세속사업에 투자하다가 오히려 교우들의 빚을 많이 지게 되어 교회에서도 약 4~5년간 추방당해야만 했다. 그러나 1858년 무렵 페롱 신부가 그에게 세속 사업에서 손을 떼겠다는 다짐을 받고 그를 다시 교회활동에 참여케 하면서 그는 약 8년간 여러 프랑스 선교사들의 복사와 회장으로 활동하다가 다시 다블뤼 주교의 저술활동을 도와주게 되었다. 그는 1866년 충청도 수영의 갈매못에서 동료 4명과 함께 용감하게 신앙을 고백하고 참수형으로 천주께 목숨을 바쳤다. 그의 시신은 그의 양자를 비롯한 집안사람들이 사형장 부근에서 병방골 선산으로 이장하였다.
The life and activity of St. Luke Hwang Seok-Doo(1813~1866)
This thesis is about the life and activity of St. Luke Hwang Seok-Doo(1813~1866) at the viewpoint of realism. He comparatively has a plenty of historical materials compared with his fellow Catholics, therefore we have difficulties as we must discriminate between the right data and the wrong about him, and choose the useful date. He was born in rich familly of the country nobleman, Hyang-Ban at Byeong-Bang-Kol, Yeon-Poong in the province of Choong-Cheong, in 1813. He married but had not sexual relations with his wife, and made his nephew a son, by whom his wife was supported. Due to this adopted son, he freely acted as an assistant of the French missionary or a catechist of the Catholics, or helper of writing activity. His hope was two ; the one was freely propagate to all Koreans in the period of religious freedom, and the other was become a martyr for Jesus by local persecution. He studied in the temporal seminary for three years owing to approval to his admission by Beshop J.J.Ferréol (1808~1853), But he was refused to become the priest by the Vatican because there was not any nunnery for his wife in Korea. And then he stopped his seminary education, at the same time he engaged worldly business and got into debt of Catholic fellows as madly as possible. He was forced to be exiled from the Church owing to his debts for four or five years. But in the year of 1858, Father S. Féron (1827~1903) called him back to the Church and admitted him to serve missionary work on condition of prohibition of worldly bussiness. Therefore he acted as helper of many French missionaries or catechist about for eight years, eventually became the assistant of Beshop A. Daveluy(1818~1866) by helping Beshop’s Writing activity. He bravely confessed his belief of Jesus and was executed by beheading by persecutors, with his four fellows at Galmemot in the naval base of the province Choong-Cheong in 1866. His body was buried at the spot of execution, and removed grave to his family gravesite at Byeong-Bang-Kol, by his family members containing his adopted son.
