인토르체타가 《중용》을 라틴어로 번역한 이유는 무엇인가?
인토르체타가 라틴어 《중용》을 번역하게 된 이유는 무엇일까? 라틴어 《중용》은 기본적으로 리치의 보유론과 적응주의 선교 사업의 방법론적인 토대 작업의 일환으로 탄생하였다. 물론 《중용》의 라틴어 번역을 통해서 동양 사상 세계를 서양의 지성 세계에 소개하려는 이유도 무시할 수 없다. 하지만 인토르체타가 라틴어 《중용》을 번역하게 된 결정적인 이유는 전례 논쟁 때문이었다. 전거는 인토르체타의 <헌정사>와 라틴어 《중용》에 포함된 8편이다. 이글들은 쿠플레가 1687년에 파리에서 《중국인 철학자 공자》를 출판하면서 지워버린 것들이다. 이것들을 전하는 문헌은 Cod. Lat. 6277이다.
Why made Intorcetta translate Zhōng yōng(中庸, Doctrine of Mean) into Latin?
Concerning this, I propose three reasons. First, Zhōng yōng was translated into Latin to support China-mission in motto of “Accomation Policy”. Second, Intorcetta tried to introduce Chinese ideas of God and religion to European audience by way of translating Zhōng yōng. Finally, the Latin translation of Zhōng yōng was primarily for defending Ricci’s Accomation Policy that was strongly criticized by Longbardi and Naverette. As for textual evidences for this argument, I provided newly found Intorcetta’s Dedicatio-letter and 8 commentaries that were totally deleted by Couplet in the publication of Confucius Sinarum philosophus in 1687 at Paris. They are preserved in Cod. Lat. 6277.
