중국 예수회 선교사들의 ‘논리학’ 요청의 배경 - 그들은 왜 《범주론》을 번역했는가
이 논문은 17세기에 중국 예수회 선교사들이 아리스토텔레스의 《범주론》 을 번역하게 된 이유를 탐구하기 위하여 작성되었다. 필자가 보기에, 중국 예수회 선교사들이 아리스토텔레스의 ‘논리학’ 을 요청하게 된 배경에는 크게 두 가지가 영향을 미쳤다. 첫 번째는 당시 유럽의 가톨릭선교를 위한 대학 교육 과정의 성립과 학문체제의 정립과 연관되어 있다. 두 번째는 중국 선교라는 고유한 환경과 조건 하에서 예수회 선교사들이 논리학 교재의 번역에 특별히 중점을 두었던 것과 연관된다. 특히 마테오 리치는 당시 중국 신유학자들의 ‘만물일체론’ 을 부정하고 새로운 ‘인성론’ 을 제시하여, 만물과 인간과 신의 관계를 논리적으로 입증하는 일에 매진하였다. 스콜라적 학문에 기초한 신학적 논리학을 소개하는 일은 바로 전통적인 중국인의 논리를 부정하고, 그들에게 새로운 기독교적 세계관을 전파하기 위한 시급한 과제였기 때문이다.
Historical context of Chinese Jesuit Missionaries' necessity for Logic
The following thesis was purposed to explore the reason why Jesuits in 17th century China got to translate Aristotle's Kategoriae. It is the author's opinion that there were two main factors that prompted Jesuits to translate Aristotelian logic. The first is related to the establishments of college education and academia during the Middle Ages of Europe, which were purposed to spread Catholicism. The second is the historical background in which Jesuits were on a mission to propagate Catholicism in China. At the time, Matteo Ricci made an effort to actively negate the theory of Wanwuyiti(萬物一體), a dominant theory of the time established by neo-Confucianists, and to propose the new theory of Renxing(人性)instead, as a tool to logically prove the relation between men, God and all things in the universe. Introducing theological logic based on Scholasticism was a must in order to abolish the traditional Chinese way of logic and spread amongst them the Christian viewpoint of the world. Aristotle's Kategoriaewas chosen for translation under such circumstances.
