최양업 신부에 대한 연구현황과 과제
한국 천주교회는 2021년에 한국인으로 두 번째 사제인 최양업 신부의 탄생 200주년을 기념하고 있다. 이러한 시기를 맞이하게 되면 자연스럽게 그에 대한 연구의 역사가 어떻게 이루어졌는가, 어떻게 해야 할 것인에 대 한 반성과 새로운 모색이 요구된다. 우리가 신앙의 조상들을 제대로 공경 하고 현양하기 위해서는 그분들에 대한 학문적인 연구가 선행되어야 하기 때문이다. 최양업 신부에 대한 연구의 역사는 크게 두 시기로 나누어볼 수가 있다. 1996~1997년에 청주교구의 배티 성지에서 모두 4권으로 된 최양업 신부 에 대한 자료집들을 간행함으로써 중요한 분기점을 맞게 되었던 것이다. 이러한 사료에 대한 본격적인 관심은 이전까지 초보적인 수준에 머물고 있다고 평가되는 최양업 신부에 대한 연구를 새로운 단계로 들어가게 해 주었다. 최양업 신부에 대한 연구에서 지금까지 크게 주목된 주제들은 가문, 유 학, 사목 지역, 교회사 연구, 교리교육, 대외인식, 그리고 선종 장소에 대한 내용으로 정리할 수 있을 것이다. 그러나 이들 주제에 대해서는 보다 구체 적으로 다루어야 부분들이 많으며, 여러 논쟁들에 대해서도 새로운 분석 이 앞으로 필요하다고 생각된다. 이러한 검토를 통해서 확인되는 사실은 한국 천주교회사 연구에서 최 양업 신부를 비롯해서 개별 인물을 연구하는 방법론에 대한 새로운 모색 이 필요하다는 생각이 든다는 것이다. 다루어지는 인물들이 조금은 더 입 체적이고, 생동감 있도록 서술되었으면 하는 바람을 가지기 때문이다. 이 는 보다 다양한 주제에 대하여 더욱 많은 질문들이 제기되어야 하며, 그러 한 질문들을 바탕으로 보다 풍부하고 다양한 해석이 새롭게 이루어져야 함을 의미하는 것이다. 그래야만 한국 천주교회사연구가 시대와 사회 속 에서 자신의 삶과 신앙을 살아갔던 사람들의 살아있는 역사로 채워질 수 있을 것이다.
A Review of Researches on Father Choi Yang-eop
The Korean Catholic Church is celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of the second Korean priest, Father Choi Yang-eop, in 2021. Facing such a period, it seems natural to reflect on how past studies were conducted, so that future research can be properly carried out. This is because academic research must precede in order for us to righteously honor our ancestors of faith. The history of research on Father Choi Yang-eop can be divided into two periods. From 1996 to 1997, a four-volume collection of materials about Father Choi Yang-eop was published by the Cheongju diocese’s Baeti Holy land, which marked an important turning point. This full-fledged interest in these historical materials brought the study of Father Choi Yang-eop, which had been evaluated to be at a rudimentary level, into a new stage. In the study of Father Choi Yang-eop, the major topics, so far, were the contents regarding his family, abroad years of study, pastoral area, study of church history, teaching of Christian doctrines, recognition of foreign relations, and his death place. However, there are many parts that need to be dealt in detail concerning these topics. Also, a new analysis is needed for various controversies, in the future. What is confirmed through this review is that in the study of the history of the Korean Catholic Church, it is necessary to seek a new method for studying individual figures, including Father Choi Yang-eop. So that, the figures of those studies can be described in a more diverse and lively manner. This means that more questions should be raised on broader topics, and various interpretations should blossom based on those questions. Only then will the study of the history of the Korean Catholic Church be filled with the living history of those who have lived their faith.
