『범주론』의 ‘legetai’와 『명리탐』의 ‘칭위’(稱謂)에 관한 논의
17세기 중국에서 『명리탐』의 출간은 수용사적 관점에서는 대체로 실패 로 평가된다. 그러나 『명리탐』 자체의 학술적 가치에 대한 평가는 이 평가 와 상관없이 이루어질 수 있는 것이다. 그 평가에서는 『명리탐』이 얼마나 많은 독자를 확보했는지가 아니라 번역이 얼마나 성공적인지 여부가 가 장 비중 있게 검토되어야 한다. 이 글은 『명리탐』이 아리스토텔레스 『범주 론』의 ‘legetai’의 번역어로 제시한 ‘稱’과 ‘謂’의 적절성을 검토하려는 시 도다. 이 검토의 결과 『명리탐』의 번역자들이 그 두 번역어를 논의의 맥락 에 맞게 구별하여 적절히 사용하고 있다는 것이 확인되었다. 필자는 그것 이 『명리탐』 전체의 가치를 결정할 수 있을 만큼 중요한 대목에서 성공적 인 번역이 이루어졌음을 의미하는 것으로 이해했다. 이 검토를 근거로 필 자는 『명리탐』 자체의 가치는 긍정적인 평가를 받아 마땅하다는 결론을 제시했다. 그리고 번역의 성공은 수용사적 성공을 향한 어려운 첫 관문을 통과했다는 것을 뜻하니 만치 수용사적 관점에서 『명리탐』에 대한 평가도 어느 정도는 수정이 필요하다는 시사도 했다.
on the ‘legetai’ in Categoriae and ‘稱謂’ in Minglitan
From the viewpoint of reception history, the publication of Minglitan in seventeenth-century China is generally judged as a failure. However, this judgment does not imply that the academic quality of this work also should be evaluated in the same way. This paper is an attempt to assess the value of Minglitan independently from the question of reception. By highlighting the very sophisticated usage of ‘稱’ and ‘謂’ as Chinese equivalent for ‘legetai’ in Aristotle’s Categoriae, I think, I can show how the authors of Minglitan could succeed in rendering a kind of Chinese version of Aristotelian dialectics. If this success makes Minglitan valuable in terms of academic achievement, maybe we need to rethink the totally negative judgment on the reception problem, for Minglitan’s success implies the success in exchanging thoughts between East and West and that means already a success in the reception history.
