천주교 교리서 『셩교요리문답』 목판본 연구
『셩교요리문답』은 조선 천주교회가 중국의 교리문답서(敎理問答書)를 한글로 번역한 책이다. 1860년대에 목판본이 간행된 후에 1934년 『천주 교 요리문답』이 나올 때까지 70여 년간 한국 천주교회 공식 교리서로 사 용되었다. 이처럼 『셩교요리문답』이 한국 천주교 역사에서 큰 의미가 있 지만 여전히 규명해야 할 문제가 있다. 이에 이 글에서는 『셩교요리문답』 목판본에 초점을 두고 연구하였다. 첫째, 『셩교요리문답』과 연관된 교리서가 언제 조선에 유입되었는지 를 검토하였다. 『셩교요리문답』과 긴밀하게 연관된 교리문답서들이 자료 에서 확인되는 시기는 1850년대 중반이다. 이 교리문답서들은 1856년 이 전, 조선에 전해져 한글로 번역되었다. 둘째, 『셩교요리문답』 목판본의 간행 연도를 규명하였다. 지금까지는 『셩교요리문답』 목판본이 1864년에 간행된 것으로 알려져 왔다. 그런데 기존의 통설을 분석한 결과, 자료 해석상의 문제가 있었음이 밝혀졌다. 또한 1864년에 간행된 서적에는 있는 간기(刊記)가 『셩교요리문답』에는 없었다는 점도 확인하였다. 명확한 간행 연도를 파악하기 위해 베르뇌 주교와 다블뤼 주교의 문서를 검토하였고, 그 결과 『셩교요리문답』 목판본이 1864년이 아니라 1861년에 간행되었음을 규명하였다. 셋째, 『셩교요리문답』 목판본의 특징을 검토하였다. 이를 위해 그 주요 저본이 되는 『聖敎要理問答』(1844년 중간본)와 대조하였다. 『셩교요리문답』 목판본은 『聖敎要理問答』을 그대로 번역한 것이 아니었다. 한문본의 내용이 빠지기도 했고, 한문본에 없는 내용이 추가되기도 했다. 이는 『셩교요리문답』 목판본을 만들면서 조선 천주교회의 상황, 베르뇌 주교나 다블뤼 주교가 신자들에게 당부하는 사항 등이 반영된 결과로 여겨진다.
A Study on the woodblock edition of Catholic catechism Seonggyo Yori Mundap
The Seonggyo Yori Mundap(셩교요리문답) was a Korean translation of Chinese catechism by the Joseon Catholic Church. After the woodblock edition was published in the 1860s, it was used as an Korean Catholic official catechism for more than 70 years until the Cheonjugyo Yori Mundap(천주 교요리문답) was published in 1934. As such, the Seonggyo Yori Mundap is of great significance in Korean Catholic history. Therefore, I particularly focused on woodblock edition of the Seonggyo Yori Mundap in this article. The contents examined in this article are as follows. The first question is when were the catechisms related to the Seonggyo Yori Mundap introduced from China to Joseon. As a result of analyzing documents, it was confirmed that the catechisms closely related to the Seonggyo Yori Mundap were introduced to Joseon before 1856 and translated into Korean. The second question is when was the woodblock edition of Seonggyo Yori Mundap published. Until now, it has been said that it was published in 1864. However, this theory stems from misinterpretation of the documents. And the Korean Catholic literatures, which were published using woodblocks in 1864, had the copyright papers, but the Seonggyo Yori Mundap didn't have it. In other words, there is no evidence to support the theory that the woodblock edition of Seonggyo Yori Mundap was published in 1864. From the documents of Bishop Berneux and Bishop Daveluy, it is clear that the woodblock edition of Seonggyo Yori Mundap was published in 1861, not 1864. The third question is what are the characteristics of the woodblock edition of Seonggyo Yori Mundap. As a result of comparing the woodblock edition of Seonggyo Yori Mundap with the Chinese original text(聖敎要理 問答), the Korean version was not a translation of the Chinese original text without any corrections. Some contents of the Chinese original text were omitted, or some sentences that were not in the original text were newly added. This suggests that the woodblock edition of Seonggyo Yori Mundap was made by reflecting the situation of the Joseon Catholic Church and what Bishop Berneux and Bishop Daveluy advised Joseon believers.
